Japanese Abdominal Hara Massage
in Japan called Ampuku

Hara in Japanese stands for the abdominal region, the Hara is the location where you’ll find the Lower Dan Tien located below the navel considered the foundation of Standing, Breathing, Body awareness and it’s believed to aid control of Thoughts and Emotions.

“Hara is a word frequently used in both Japanese Traditional Medicine and in the Japanese Martial Arts”

Ampuku addresses psychological and emotional issues and trauma release.

Hara is considered a very important physical, psychological and energetic area of the body. It is thought to process and develop so-called life-elixir by refining Jing Essence into Ki Life Energy (Qi, Prana).

All vital energies flow into the Hara, the major blood vessels incl. Aorta and Vena Cava pass through it, and obviously, the Hara is the seat of many of the internal organs, like digestive, reproductive and sexual organs, Ampuku aims to promote healthy internal organs, balance and heal the digestive and gastrointestinal system, and heal or alleviate genital and reproductive disorders.

Through Ampuku therapy we can connect the imbalances of the body to the inner blockages that created our discomforts & helping us to start a personal inner process to transform in most optimal and individual natural healing.

Is Ampuku for you?

If you feel tension in your body, heaviness in your abdomen, or a quiet sense of disconnection within, this work may be calling you.
Ampuku supports a return to balance through gentle, intuitive touch and deep listening to the body.

One of my favourite techniques I use is Ampuku

or traditional Japanese abdominal acupressure. It is a highly refined form of manual therapy and forms the foundation of what is now known as Shiatsu.

It allows an openness to healing that can reach all the way back to our mother’s womb, as well as address more recent imbalances. It is one of the gentlest, yet most potent forms of somatic work, explored with the permission of our bodies.

In Japanese healing arts, the abdomen (or Hara) is seen as a vital centre of energy for the body. Therefore, Hara work is considered an essential part of any successful bodywork practice.

The Hara is the key not only to our physical body, but also to our mental, emotional, spiritual, and energetic being. By unblocking the Hara, the organs can function more efficiently, the immune system is supported, and the body and mind begin to work as one. Balance is restored.

This was emphasised by Shiatsu Master Shizuto Masunaga, who recognised Ampuku as a fundamental part of Shiatsu and developed diagnostic approaches based on abdominal work understanding that the abdomen can reveal and influence the state of the whole body.

Ampuku means “The Pulse of the Hara” or “Calming the Abdomen”
